Only the most self centered species…

Odd thought.  Who would it be for?  Who else beside humans is studying it at all?  Who is it that Hitchens thought was judging humans for believing this about themselves?  Who is it that Hitchens thought cared one way or the other… other than himself, with all his ‘selflessness’ and ‘humility’?
Only the most extraordinarily self-loathing individual would find fault in wanting to believe in their own self-worth, especially when it harms no one else.

I think its for the sake of experience, not just our own. Every aspect of this universe is alive with energy, and from the largest known object in the universe, to even the smallest observable phenomena the patterns of the universe behave in incredibly similar ways, scale be damned. If you’re familiar with the mathematical constants, Pi and Phi, and their role in nature, you begin to see that Hitchens is right: we are self-centered to believe that its going on for our sake.
But I don’t think his implication stands that such a thing could not be deliberate - that our conscious experience of the universe is for our sake because consciousness is an inherently self-centered existence. We are trapped within the confines of our own skull, forever destined to observe. I think the most humble aspect of creation is the notion that, whether we are alone in this universe or not, the entire thing is a flawless system of near-perfect cycles and orbits.
I agree with you; I think we should dismiss Hitchens’ attitude of self-loathing, because hating the self will only destroy the self. But I believe it is equally destructive to love oneself without a sense of one’s place in the universe.
